There are several definitions of concussion (see image hotspots), but simply put, when the brain is subjected to a significant force, the stress initiates a complex cascade of events within the brain, leading to alterations in the brains blood flow and ‘electrical’ activity. These alterations cause a variety of clinical signs and symptoms, and increases the brain’s vulnerability to a second trauma. The most serious of which is Second Impact Syndrome.

A mild form of traumatic brain injury.
A ‘traumatically induced transient disturbance of brain function that involves a complex pathophysiological process’ (Harmon et al, 2013).
A series of trauma induced symptoms which cannot be otherwise explained by drug, alcohol, medication, injury or other comorbidities, (McCrory et al, 2017).
