Aims & Objectives
The knee is the largest joint in the body and is both anatomically and biomechanically complex, making it susceptible to many types of injury. In the general public and across sports it has been shown to be one of the most frequently injured joint accounting for 40% of all sports injuries (Nicholl, 1991). Therefore, it is paramount that you have a sound understanding of common sports injuries to the knee, and how they should be managed.
This section will focus on common knee injuries encountered within school sports, detailing their presentation, assessment and management. Like the ankle module, it is an interactive learning experience, so ensure to engage with the videos, hotspots and quizzes.
The aims of the following section are:
- Understand the main anatomical structures of the knee which may be injured, enabling diagnosis and documentation.
- Understand the common presentations of knee injuries presenting in the school setting, and how they should be managed.
- Be able to carry out the Ottawa rules for the knee and plan appropriate actions based on the results.
