Aims & Objectives
The ankle is one of the most frequently injured joints seen in sports medicine, with studies suggesting up to 30% of all sports injuries are ankle related. Within school sports this is no different, ranging from mild sprains, which can take a few minutes to settle, to serious fracture-dislocations requiring careful immediate management and ultimately surgical fixation.
This section will focus on common foot and ankle injuries seen in school sports, detailing their presentation, assessment and treatment. It is an interactive teaching module so please explore each page.
The aims of the following section are:
- To understand the main anatomical features of the ankle and how they relate to injury.
- To be able to accurately diagnose and document common ankle injuries, including:
- Foot and ankle fractures
- Inversion injuries
- Eversion (high ankle) injuries
- To be able to understand and use appropriate special tests in diagnosis, including the Ottawa rules.
- To be able to plan appropriate immediate and onward treatment based on diagnosis and examination outcome.
